Chris Simonite's Cubo-Weirdism Blog! A Blog about Chris Simonite's Art by Chris Simonite. Who the Hell else?

So it’s been a little over a year since I started to sell my work on Instagram and Facebook and it’s gone fairly well. As is my MO, I haven’t kept great records of everything, so when I do my taxes I’ll find out exactly how well I’ve done. But as well as it’s gone, I know there are people doing substantially better than me. In fairness, part of the reason for that is that their work may not be as, well, weird as mine. But I digress… Anyway, last year on CBC radio they interviewed [...]

A couple of weeks ago my attention was drawn to the first time I posted my painting of Fleabag, the character created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, on Instagram. Now I usually spend a a bit of time each morning composing something to accompany my daily Instagram post. I often even get my wife to have a look at it before I post to make sure I haven’t written something that is unclear–she’s a helluvan editor. However, In the case of the Fleabag post, I feel like I probably didn’t do that.   Fleabag, 11″ x 14″, oil [...]

So today I thought I’d post this commission of the Baroque composer Henry Purcell. Yeah, that’s right someone commissioned me to do a portrait of a British composer from the Baroque era. It’s a first and it was a fun one and I’d happily do more. Just Sayin’. Anyway this painting was commissioned partly to be the avatar image for a new podcast that will be produced by a Winnipeg based professional choir that specializes performing Renaissance, Indigenous-Infused and contemporary music, called Camerata Nova. They are interesting and unique as hell, you should [...]

2021 is turning out to be the year of the commission for me. Case in point this new painting of Walter and The Dude from one of my all time favourite movies, The Big Lebowski. This one is entitled: Goodnight Sweet Prince, because (spoiler alert), this is technically a portrait of three of the characters from the movie. Donnie’s ashes (he would be the aforementioned Sweet Prince) are in the Folgers can and the scene captured here is just moments before they are blown in The Dude’s face. Damn, I love that movie! Also, [...]

I thought about titling this post “Game of Shite”, or something like that, considering my completely written-down rule that there must be a curse word in all of my blog post titles, just to amuse myself. But I thought better of it because that might make it seem like I don’t like Game of Thrones and that would be incorrect. I mean, I didn’t love the ending, but who the hell did? Anyway, that’s not what this post is about. This post is about failure. The kind of failure that happens to every painter on [...]
